Comp2Kids was modeled after the ON_DEC program launched by the JP Morgan Chase Foundation in 1998 at the Ditmas Middle School, which is located in an impoverished Brooklyn neighborhood. The program provided every teacher with a new laptop computer and every student received a new desktop computer. Comprehensive training was provided by JP Morgan Chase and ClassRooms Inc. After a period of 3 years, an independent evaluation found the following results: significant increase of competence in the use of technology among teachers, parents and students, improved teacher and student retention rates, reduced incidences of misbehavior, and reduced school dropout rates.
Using the ON_DEC model, Comp2Kids redesigned the program to keep most of the benefits, while eliminating much of the cost. Comp2Kids successfully continues to bring technology to children at inner schools by relying on dedicated volunteers, generous donors, and the affordable reconditioned computers provided by Per Scholas.
Schools are chosen by Comp2Kids in collaboration with the Department of Education and the school district based on the following criteria: high poverty rate, lack of access to technology services and strong leadership qualities of the school’s administrative team.
After selecting a school and establishing an implementation plan with the principal and administration, Comp2Kids and Per Scholas provide the children, parents, and teachers with a training course in basic computer skills and proper usage of the internet. After successful completion of the course, Comp2Kids and Per Scholas distribute reconditioned Pentium III computers to the children, and reconditioned laptops to the teachers; enabling them to use their computers as they move between classrooms and home. Placing computers at student’s homes allows parents to support their children's growth, and encourages them to play an integral part in the overall educational experience. Additionally, Comp2Kids works with school principals and management to encourage the effective use of technology within the school's curriculum.
Schools in which Comp2Kids has implemented their program have shown:
Higher grades
Improved teacher and student relationships
Higher level of participation from parents
Higher level of student cooperation in the classrooms
